DESCRIPTION:Featured lecturer Dr. John Warner\, co-founder of the field of Green Chemistry\n4pm. Learn more\n\nThis annual event was established in 2001 to honor and celebrate the late Prof. Joseph Bunnett’s seminal contributions: Prof. Bunnett was a pioneer in his sub-discipline of physical organic chemistry and a founding member of our department. The Bunnett Symposium has evolved into an opportunity to connect past and present friends of the Department for discussion\, accompanied by exposure to seminal ideas in chemistry through the distinguished lecture\, and an Awards Ceremony where we honor the academic and research achievements of our current crop of outstanding undergraduates.  \nJohn Warner is a chemistry Inventor and cofounder of the field of Green Chemistry\nIn the early 1990’s John realized that global students in chemistry had little (or no) training in predictive toxicology or understanding of environmental systems. He felt that the consequence of this lack of training was a root cause for why many industrial products and processes have negative impacts on human health and the environment. He realized that an ongoing lack of training would forever inhibit the invention of better\, more sustainable technologies. Together with Paul Anastas\, he defined the field of Green Chemistry and created the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. He has spent his life working to change the field of chemistry and the education of future chemists to ensure that all practicing chemists will one day have the necessary skills to invent truly sustainable technologies. Together with Dr. Amy Cannon\, he founded the non-profit\, Beyond Benign that offers the “Green Chemistry Commitment” that asks University Chemistry programs to add the principles of green chemistry into their required curriculum. As of 2022 nearly 100 international universities have signed this commitment. John’s career has spanned all aspects of the chemical enterprises\, providing real world examples of green chemistry: \nAs an Industrial Chemist: \n\nWorked for Polaroid Corporation and The Zymergen Corporation.\nReceived the Perkin Medal in 2014. Arnold\, California Institute of Technology’s Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering\, Bioengineering and Biochemistry and director of the Donna and Benjamin M. Rosen Bioengineering Center. \nSpeaker Profile:\nDr. Frances Arnold\, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering\, Bioengineering and Biochemistry and Director of the Rosen Bioengineering Center at the California Institute of Technology\, became the first American woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (2018) for pioneering directed evolution methods used to make enzymes for applications across medicine\, consumer products\, agriculture\, fuels and chemicals.  She was appointed Co-Chair of the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology (PCAST) by President Biden in 2021. Arnold received the Bower Award in Science in 2019\, the Millennium Technology Prize in 2016\, the Charles Stark Draper Prize in 2011\, and a 2011 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. \nShe is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, the American Philosophical Society\, and the US National Academies of Science\, Medicine\, and Engineering; she was appointed to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences by Pope Francis in 2019.  Arnold received her B.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California\, Berkeley. \nLecture Title & Abstract:\nInnovation by Evolution: Bringing New Chemistry to Life\nNot satisfied with biology’s vast catalyst repertoire\, I want to create new enzyme catalysts and expand the chemistry of life. We use the most powerful biological design process\, evolution\, to optimize existing enzymes and invent new ones\, thereby circumventing our profound ignorance of how sequence encodes function. Chemistry encoded in DNA and optimized by evolution enables efficient\, sustainable routes to important fuels and chemicals. Evolution not only optimizes\, it can also innovate and create entirely new enzyme catalysts. I will illustrate how whole families of new-to-nature enzymes increase the scope of molecules and materials that can be built using synthetic biology.

This special two-day event features remarks from keynote speakers Carolyn Bertozzi (Sept. 27) and Malika Jeffries-EL (Sept. 28). Don’t miss these exciting TED-style talks by the rising stars in our 2021 class in which they lay out their vision for the future of their fields. \nCarolyn Bertozzi is the Baker Family Director of Stanford ChEM-H and the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University. She is also an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Editor-in-Chief of ACS Central Science. Her research focuses on profiling changes in cell surface glycosylation associated with cancer\, inflammation and infection\, and exploiting this information for development of diagnostic and therapeutic approaches\, most recently in the area of immuno-oncology. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine\, the National Academy of Sciences\, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She also has been awarded the Lemelson-MIT Prize\, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship\, the Chemistry for the Future Solvay Prize\, among many others. \nMalika Jeffries-EL received BA degrees in Chemistry and Africana Studies at Wellesley College and M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from The George Washington University. After spending one year at Smith College as a Mendenhall Fellow she worked as a post-doctoral researcher under the direction of Professor Richard D. McCullough at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2005\, she joined the faculty in the Chemistry Department at Iowa State University and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2012. She was a Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Professor in the chemistry department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015. She joined the Department of Chemistry and Division of Materials Science at Boston University in 2016.
