SUMMARY:Reinventing the Way We Break Down Plastic Waste (SLAC Public Lecture)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 26\, 2026\, from 7:00–8:00 p.m. PDT\nSLAC National Accelerator Laboratory\, Kavli Auditorium\nWatch online or register to attend in person. Learn more \nFrom our kitchens to our clothes to the delivery of medicines\, plastics play an indispensable role in our daily lives. But\, the end-life of these plastics is not always taken into account. Few types of plastics can be readily recycled\, and durable plastics take centuries to break down in landfills or in the environment. Here at SLAC\, we are designing chemical processes that can break down plastics under controlled conditions while also making useful products. Using X-ray light\, we observe the details of this breakdown at the atomic level and use this information to design pathways for the degradation of plastics into useful products. We are members of a consortium that aims to make tomorrow’s plastics recyclable and biodegradable by design. In this lecture\, I will describe my work on visualizing and improving our methods for breaking down plastic waste into useful products. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Ozge Bozkurt\nOzge Bozkurt is a chemical and biological engineer\, with bachelor’s of science degrees in molecular biology & genetics\, and chemical engineering from the Istanbul Technical University\, a master’s of science degree from Delft University of Technology and a PhD from Koc University. She has worked in the oil and gas industry as a research and development engineer with a specialization in biofuels. She is currently a research associate at SLAC\, conducting experiments on chemical recycling of plastic waste. Working at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource at SLAC\, she uses powerful X-rays to observe polymer breakdown and catalysts in action. In her free time she enjoys visiting science museums and has volunteered at many STEM outreach activities at SLAC.

When sunlight interacts with a molecule\, it first transfers its energy to the electrons.  Then\, as the electrons move\, the molecule changes form\, reshaping itself or even breaking apart.  We do not fully understand how electrons affect the molecules to which they belong because it is very hard to catch them in action.  Electrons move incredibly quickly\, and they behave according to the peculiar laws of quantum mechanics.  But now\, we can follow the motion of electrons using SLAC’s Linac Coherent Light Source\, an accelerator that can make pulses of X-rays that are shorter than one millionth of a billionth of a second.  In this lecture\, I will explain how this one-of-a-kind tool allows us to watch speedy electrons as they move. \n \nAbout the Speaker: Taran Driver is an Associate Staff Scientist at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the Stanford PULSE Institute. He grew up in the United Kingdom\, where he obtained his B.Sc. in physics and philosophy from the University of Nottingham in 2014\, and his Ph.D. in biomolecular structure analysis from Imperial College London in 2019. He came to SLAC in 2019 as a postdoctoral scholar at the Stanford PULSE Institute. Lee Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University and former department chair of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University\, sits down with Scott Rozelle\, the Helen F. Farnsworth Senior Fellow and the co-director of Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions\, to answer these questions and more. Born in China\, Professor Bao moved to the U.S. during college and rose to become a leading scientist and professor of chemical engineering whose work pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in fundamental science. During the conversation\, she will share how she became who she is today\, her thoughts on Stanford’s culture of innovation\, and her passion for mentoring the next generation of innovators. \nAbout the speakers:\nZhenan Bao is K.K. Lee Professor of Chemical Engineering\, and by courtesy\, a Professor of Chemistry and a Professor of Material Science and Engineering at Stanford University. Bao founded the Stanford Wearable Electronics Initiate (eWEAR) in 2016 and serves as the faculty director. \nPrior to joining Stanford in 2004\, she was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in Bell Labs\, Lucent Technologies from 1995-2004. She received her Ph.D in Chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1995.  She has over 700 refereed publications and over 100 US patents with a Google Scholar H-Index 190.\nBao has received notable recognition for her work in chemical engineering. Most recently\, she was the inaugural recipient of the VinFuture Prize Female Innovator 2021\, the ACS Chemistry of Materials Award 2022\, MRS Mid-Career Award in 2021\, AICHE Alpha Chi Sigma Award 2021\, ACS Central Science Disruptor and Innovator Prize in 2020\, and the Gibbs Medal by the Chicago session of ACS in 2020. \nBao is a co-founder and on the Board of Directors for C3 Nano and PyrAmes\, both are silicon-valley venture funded start-ups. She serves as an advising Partner for Fusion Venture Capital. \nScott Rozelle is the Helen F. Farnsworth Senior Fellow and the co-director of Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research at Stanford University.  For the past 30 years\, he has worked on the economics of poverty reduction. Currently\, his work on poverty has its full focus on human capital\, including issues of rural health\, nutrition and education. For the past 20 year\, Rozelle has been the chair of the International Advisory Board of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy\, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Most recently\, Rozelle’s research focuses on the economics of poverty and inequality\, with an emphasis on rural education\, health and nutrition in China. In recognition of this work\, Dr. Rozelle has received numerous honors and awards. Among them\, he became a Yangtse Scholar (Changjiang Xuezhe) in Renmin University of China in 2008. In 2008 he also was awarded the Friendship Award by Premiere Wen Jiabao\, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a foreigner.

In doing so\, electricity generated from solar and wind sources requires energy storage. To meet today’s tough demands\, however\, energy storage designs must do many things – store more energy\, charge faster\, be capable of mass production\, decrease costs for the consumer\, be safe\, and be made of materials that minimize harm to the environment. We can now address these issues not only through the overall battery chemistry but also by observing the structure and operation of batteries at the nano- and even the atomic scale. In this talk\, I will present some new ideas about the design of batteries – from electric vehicles to consumer power on the grid – and share my perspective on the path to the batteries of the future. \nJoin us at the Panofsky Auditorium or online. He is the Fortinet Founders Professor in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Energy Science and Engineering\, and a Professor at Photon Science at SLAC. He obtained his B.S. in chemistry from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1998 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Harvard University in 2002. He joined the Stanford faculty in 2005. By now\, he has published 540 research papers in chemistry\, materials science\, and energy science\, earning him a #1 ranking in Thomson Reuter’s “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” in 2014\, the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Award in 2020\, and election to the National Academy of Sciences in 2022. He has founded six companies to commercialize technologies developed by his research group: Amprius\, 4C Air\, EEnotech\, EnerVenue\, LifeLabs Design\, and EnnoPure. Amprius\, a leading high energy density battery company\, was recently listed (AMPX) in the New York Stock Exchange. \nAttend In Person: \nThe public lecture will be held in person at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory\, in the Panofsky Auditorium in the Science & User Support Building (SUSB).
